I was reading in Isaiah this morning, and I read this and it made me wonder if this is this where monks got their “lowly” status and clothing from?
“Instead of perfume there will be rottenness; and instead of a belt, a rope; and instead of well-set hair, baldness; and instead of a rich robe, a skirt of sackcloth; and branding instead of beauty.” — Isaiah 3:24 ESV
It was oddly specific to what they wear. I realized before that it was talking about women, but I can’t tell if this verse was directed to the preceding ones, or talking about men too? It said turbans and that was predominately a male headdress correct?
Much obliged,

Hi Jonathan.
What a great thing it is for young people to be reading the Scriptures and really thinking about what they read! Thank you! There is a reward from Jesus for that when it is done sincerely.
As for turbans, they may be for men or women, though styles will differ for each. In the verses from Isaiah 3 (our translation is below), God is denouncing only the proud women in Jerusalem. He has plenty to say to the proud men in other places, as I am sure you have read.
Isaiah 3
16. Moreover, Jehovah says, because you are haughty, O daughters of Zion, and walk about with stretched-out neck and wanton eyes, walking and mincing as you go, and with their feet, they jingle their anklets.
17. But my Lord will strike with a scab the scalp of the daughters of Zion, and Jehovah will expose their private parts.
18. In that day, my Lord will take away finery: the anklets, and the headbands, and the crescent-shaped ornaments,
19. the pendants, and the bracelets, and the veils,
20. the tiaras, and the armlets, and the sashes, and vials of perfume, and the charms,
21. the rings and the nose-rings,
22. the festal robes, and the mantles, and the cloaks, and the purses,
23. and the mirrors, and the fine linen, and the headdresses, and the shawls,
24. and it will be that instead of a sweet aroma, there shall be rottenness; and instead of a girdle, a rope; and instead of well-set hair, baldness; and instead of a fancy robe, a wrap of sackcloth; branding instead of beauty.
25. Your men shall fall by the sword, and your mighty men in battle,
26. and her gates shall mourn and lament, and she will sit on the ground, purged.
Thank you for the question, Jonathan. It was a thoughtful one.
