I had never noticed that there were two demon possessed men in one passage, and just one in the other. I had always assumed these to be the same event.
Matthew 8:28 (KJV)
“And when he was come to the other side into the country of the Gergesenes, there met him two possessed with devils…”
Mark 5:2 (KJV)
“And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit.”

Hi Wendell.
No one knows for certain the answer to your question. Jesus performed many more healings and miracles than are recorded in the Bible (Jn.21:25), and with that many miracles, there were bound to be some that were very similar. But it may also be that Matthew told a part of the story that Mark left out. Nobody can say for sure.
