Hi,
Do we know who Theophilus is?
Luke writes to him in Luke 1:3-4, calling him “most excellent” and says he’s writing so he “might know the trustworthiness of the things you have been taught.”
Again, in Acts 1:1, Luke is addressing Theophilus.
Thanks,
Danielle

No Danielle, we do not know.
There are two possibilities. First, Theophilus might have been a person. And since Luke calls him “most excellent”, that seems to have been the case. There is a second possibility, however. The Greek word “theophilus” means “friend of God”, and so, Luke could have been writing to whoever was a friend of God. But I think the first option is the better one.
That is all the information I have to give you.
Thank you for asking. It is exciting to discover new questions as we read the Bible. I am glad to see you doing it.
