Hi John,
This morning I was reading Psalm 24 and became curious about verses 7 & 9. What is the meaning of “lift up your heads, oh ye gates” and “everlasting doors”? I know that judgment by the elders of Israel often occurred at the gates of the city. Do the everlasting gates and everlasting doors refer to the judges of Israel?
Psa 24:7 Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.
Psa 24:8 Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle.
Psa 24:9 Lift up your heads, O ye gates; even lift them up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.
Thanks,
Tom

Hi Tom.
I usually read those verse as references to the saints, but I haven’t spent much time pondering over the issue. The gates I think of as God’s judges among the saints, and the everlasting doors as the eyes of His people, lifted up to heaven.
On the other hand, if you remember, we learned in Revelation that even the furniture in heaven spoke. This makes it seems that there is life in everything that is in God’s presence; so, why couldn’t the Psalmist be moved by the Spirit to speak to some eternal gates and doors?
Whatever those verses refer to, rejoice that you can lift up your eyes and hands to heaven, and that there is Someone there who loves you.
