Luke 3:16-17

John,

I have a question concerning Luke 3:16-17:  “John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire”

I had a man pose a thought to me on the internet today.  He said that it is wrong to want to be baptized with the holy Ghost AND fire.  He said we want the first, but not the second.  He says that John was saying that there are two separate things Jesus was talking about.  The baptism of the holy Ghost is for the wheat – and then the baptism of fire is for the damned, the chaff.  He said the “baptism of fire” is described in Luke 3:17.

Cloven tongues of fire appeared in Acts 2, that is what I had always thought about the holy Ghost and fire.

His take was a different one on these verses.  Wanted to know what you thought about that.  Is the baptism of the holy Ghost and fire one and the same?

Hi Gary:

Jesus administers only one baptism, the baptism of the holy Ghost and fire.  Neither Jesus nor John, nor Paul, nor any other man of God taught that “the holy Ghost and fire” should be understood to mean that he administers two.

Let’s keep our focus on the basics.  There is enough work to do, just to persuade God’s saints of the ABC’s of the kingdom, to keep us busy enough.
