The baptism by the Holy Spirit belongs to the fundamentals of God’s gospel. This is the first experience for people when they receive Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour. Jesus baptizes them with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit gives them the new life in Christ, and they become new creations in Christ. 2 Cor. 5:17. When you are born again, you are born of the Spirit. John 3:6-8.

In the Pentecostal churches they have not preached the truth of the baptism by the Holy Spirit. They have learnt only a little part of this biblical truth, and the little they have learnt, they have turned back to front. In the Assembly of God, the Body of Christ, we are all baptized by one Spirit into one body, but not all have the gift to speaking with tongues. 1 Cor. 12:12-31. People who are not baptized by the Holy Spirit cannot belong to the Assembly of God. Therefore, the baptism by the Holy Spirit must take the place when we become saved. By the new birth we are born into God’s family, the Assembly of God.

The Pentecostal preachers have turned this back to front. They say that only those who can speak with tongues are baptized by the Holy Spirit, and that the gift to speaking with tongues is the only safe sign that someone is baptized by the Holy Spirit. This is a dangerous denying of a work that Jesus and the Holy Spirit have done, and legalization of false speaking with tongues. The gift to speaking with tongues is the gift, which is easiest to falsify. Anyone can learn something of a foreign language and rattle off it in a meeting, so that people believe that it is speaking with tongues.

They have preached that the baptism with the Holy Spirit is only for those who are born again. Yet, on the day of Pentecost the apostle Peter promised people, which were not born again, that they would get the Holy Spirit as a gift when they did repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Consider, that Peter promised the Holy Spirit to people who had not been born again! And when they received the Holy Spirit, what happened then? Well, then they got the new life in Christ and became born again! Observe. The Holy Spirit himself is the gift, not only the experience of the baptism with the Holy Spirit. Gal. 3:14. 1 Thess. 4:8. The Holy Spirit gives us the new life in Christ so that we become born again.

Dear Allan,

Thank you for taking the time to write concerning the baptism of the holy Ghost.

If speaking in tongues was merely “a gift” (meaning one among many gifts), there may be some merit to your position of not needing it to be part of the body of Christ.  But Paul never described speaking in tongues as “A gift”.  Nor do the scriptures indicate that one can be baptized with the Spirit withOUT speaking in tongues.  We must weigh ALL the evidence.

The gift (which you are saying that only “some” have) is that of “divers tongues”.  That gift is an added measure of tongues for edification among those who already SPEAK in tongues (just as the gift of faith is an added measure of faith unto those who already have faith.)

Speaking in tongues is far more than “a” gift – it is the God-ordained sign of this New Covenant (Isa 28:11-12, 1 Cor.14:20-21).  To say that we don’t need the sign of the new covenant (speaking in tongues), would be the equivalent of saying that during the old testament time, one did not need the sign of the old covenant (circumcision).  That “sign” was so important (to God and man), we are told if one did NOT have circumcision, they were NOT a part of the Israel of God (from GOD’S perspective).  It is no different in the new.

You seem like a studious man, and I have attached our full study guide on this issue.  If you read it carefully and prayerfully, you will find why your position is not the correct one after the evidence is weighed.  I hope you will be a wise man like the great biblical man in the book of Acts, Appollos.  When he was shown a more perfect way by Aquilla and Prescilla, he was quick to recognize it, and change his course.  His heart was ready.

Blessings,
