Why Some Thought Jesus was a Cult Leader

Why Some Thought that Jesus was a Cult Leader

The following would have been the thoughts of some who heard Jesus preach but did not believe him.

  1. “Jesus thinks that nobody can come to God except by him.”

Jn. 14:6. Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except by me.”

  1. “Jesus thinks that he is the only person on earth who knows God.”

Mt. 11:27b. “No one really knows the Father except the Son, and he to whom the Son may choose to reveal Him.”

  1. “Jesus has convinced his followers that he is the Savior of the whole world.”

1Jn. 2:2. He is the propitiation for our sins, not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

  1. “Jesus thinks that anyone who rejects him is going to be damned.”

Jn. 24. “If you do not believe that I am the oneyou will die in your sins.”

  1. “Jesus claims that he can keep people from ever being hungry or thirsty.”

Jn. 6:35. Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me shall never hunger, and he who believes in me shall never thirst.”

  1. “Jesus thinks that everyone who truly hears from God will believe in him.”

Jn. 6:45. “It is written in the prophets, ‘They shall all be taught by God.’ Everybody, then, who hears and learns from the Father comes to me.”

Here are some others that were sent to me:

  1. “Jesus is trying to start a ritual of drinking his blood and eating his flesh!”

Jn. 6:45. Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.”

  1. “Jesus is crazy. He doesn’t even know who is mother and siblings are.”

Mt. 12:46–48. All the while that he was speaking to the multitudes, behold, his mother and brothers had been standing outside, wanting to speak to him. Someone said to him, “Behold, your mother and your brothers have been standing outside, wanting to speak to you.” But he answered and said to the one who had spoken to him, “Who is my mother? And who are my brothers?”

  1. “Jesus thinks he is going to take over the world and make his disciples kings forever – if they forsake everything and follow him.”

Mt. 19:28–29. Jesus said to them, “Truly, I tell you that you who have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man sits down on his glorious throne, you will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And everyone who has left homes, or brothers, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands for my name’s sake shall receive a hundredfold, and then shall inherit eternal life.

  1. “And Jesus thinks that he will do that soon, in just a few years.”

Mt. 16:28. “Truly, I tell you, there are some standing here that will not taste of death until they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom!”

  1. “Jesus believes in reincarnation.”

Jn. 3:7. “You must be born again.”

  1. “Jesus breaks up marriages and families.”

Lk. 12:51–53. Do you think that I have come to give peace to the land? No, I tell you, but rather division! For from now on, there will be five divided in one house, three against two, and two against three. Father will be divided against son, and son against father; mother against daughter, and daughter against mother; and mother-in-law against daughter-in-law, and daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.

  1. “Jesus thinks the few people who believe him are the only ones who will be saved.”

Mt. 7:13–14. “Enter by the strait gate because the gate is wide and the road is broad that leads to damnation, and there are many who enter by it. How strait the gate and narrow the road that leads to life! And few there are who find it.

  1. “Jesus thinks he has power to forgive sins, like God.”

Lk. 5:20–21. Seeing their faith, he told him, “Man, your sins are forgiven you.” And the scribes and Pharisees began to reason, saying, “Who is this man who is speaking blasphemies? Who, except God only, can forgive sins?”

  1. “Jesus is crazy. He thinks he came down from heaven.”

Jn. 6:38. “I have come down from heaven.”

  1. “Jesus is crazy.  He thinks he is one of the gods, older than Abraham.”

Jn. 8:56. “Your father Abraham was overjoyed that he might see my day, and he saw it, and rejoiced.”

  1. “Jesus is so proud that he thinks he is greater than the wise men and prophets.”

Mt. 13:17. “Truly, I tell you that many prophets and righteous men longed to see the things you’re seeing, and didn’t see them, and to hear the things you’re hearing, and didn’t hear them.”

  1. “Jesus thinks he has magical building powers.”

Jn. 2:19. “Jesus said to them, ‘Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up again.’”

  1. “Jesus commands his followers to sell all their possessions and follow him.”

Lk. 18:22. When Jesus heard these words, he said to him, “There is still one thing missing in you. Sell everything you have, and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and then come, follow me.”
