this passage is great, when i was in church religion I never saw it this way! because they teach that you have to study the scriptures “because in them you have eternal life” rather than in Jesus as verse 40 says! (for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life), (in verse 38/ this people new the scriptures but they didn’t have God’s word in them)
thank you Jesus for your life!
Is this a right translation of verse 39?
I was blessed when reading this passage!! thank you Jesus!
John 5:38-44 (Worldwide English (New Testament))
38 The word he talks is not in your hearts, because you do not believe the one he sent to you.
39 You read holy writings carefully. You think that there you will find out how to live for ever. In the same writings you will read about me.
40 And yet you will not come to me for that life.
41 I do not want people to call me great.
42 But I know that you do not love God in your hearts.
43 I have come in my Father’s name, but you will not receive me. If another person comes in his own name, then you will receive him.
44 How can you believe? You are always calling each other great, but you do not want the only God to make you great.
============
Here is my translation of John 5:38-44, Manny. You can compare the two. I will say, however, that the translation of verse 41, above, is very poor. The rest is ok, but awkward.
38. And you don’t have His word abiding in you because you don’t trust the one He sent.
39. You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life, yet those Scriptures are they which testify of me,
40. and you won’t come to me that you might have life.
41. I don’t accept honor from men,
42. but I know you, that you don’t have the love of God in you.
43. I have come in my Father’s name and you don’t receive me; if another comes in his own name, you will receive him.
44. How can you believe while receiving honor from one another, and you don’t seek the honor that comes from the only God?
