  • “Son of Man”

    Pastor John,

    What did Jesus mean when he called himself “Son of man” in Mark 2:10: “So that you might know that the Son of man has the authority on earth to forgive sins.”  He was saying that he had authority to forgive sins, so why didn’t he call himself Son of God?

    Margaret

    ===========

    Hi Margaret.

    In the Bible, “Son of man” appears to have been a common way of saying “human”.  God calls Ezekiel, “son of man” a number of times.  (“You human”.) For another example, John said in Revelation 1 that the heavenly being whom he saw standing in the midst of the golden candlesticks was “like a son of man”; that is, having the form of a human.  Some translations actually say it that way, or something like it.  So, that may have been what Jesus was thinking, at least sometimes.

    Jesus’ use of the term, “Son of man” in connection with his being able to forgive sins has something to do with the fact that he has shared our sad, mortal state.  Compare that idea with what the author of Hebrews said:

    Hebrews 5

    1. For every high priest, being taken from among men, is ordained on behalf of men in matters pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins,
    2. being able to deal gently with the ignorant and misguided because he, too, is encompassed with weakness,
    3. for which reason he ought to make offerings for sins for himself as well as for the people.

    Hope that helps!

  • Mark 1:24

    Pastor John,

    Since no one knew about Jesus, how did the demons say they knew him, as in Mark 1:24?

    Margaret

    =============

    Hi Margaret!

    In the Father and Son book*, I deal with that issue pretty thoroughly. Here is a section of the book that might help:

    Pastor John

    Believing and Confessing Ignorantly

    John 9

    Jesus said, “For judgment I came into this world, so that they may see, who do not see, and so that those who do see might be made blind.”

    Some of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things, and they said to him, “We are not blind, too, are we?”

    Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would have no sin, but now you say, ‘We see’; therefore, your sin remains.”

    It is foolhardy to claim to know God, or even to claim to belong to Him, without possessing His kind of life (Rom. 8:9b). Anybody who thinks he knows God without having the life that the Son gives has more in common with Satan than he knows.  Satan had nothing but his own cherub-life with which he was created and knew nothing about the Son; still, he was absolutely confident that he knew God.  That kind of confidence is the worst kind of blindness.

    When put on trial, even though the Son of God confessed who he was before the judges of Israel, they did not know him.  Seeing only the son of Mary before them, they judged Jesus’ confession that he was a divine person to be blasphemous because it was contrary to what they thought they knew, especially the first of the Ten Commandments.  But they were blind to God’s Truth, who was standing right before them, because they claimed to already know the truth.  “Claiming to be wise,” Paul would later say, “they became fools” (Rom. 1:22).  Whoever hungers for God’s kind of righteousness is blessed because only those who feel their need of God’s kind of righteousness will ever receive it (Mt. 5:6).  On the other hand, whoever thinks he is good and wise enough without God’s life will remain spiritually blind (Jn. 9:41).

    Men’s ignorance of God led to misunderstanding the Son, and misunderstanding the Son led to hatred of him. That was one reason Jesus commanded demons to keep silent about him:

    Luke 4

    [The demon said,] “Agh! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are – the holy one of God!”

    35a. But Jesus rebuked it, saying, “Shut up, and come out of him!”

    And later in the same chapter . . .

    And demons also came out of many, crying aloud, and saying, “You are the Messiah, the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and did not let them speak because they knew him to be the Messiah.

    These two scenes seem to suggest that demons knew the Son, but the fact that demons cried out that Jesus was “the holy one”, “the Messiah”, or even “the Son of God” does not in the least mean that they knew the hidden Son. Everyone in heaven knew that God had caused Mary to conceive a child and that her son was to be the Messiah.  When Jesus was born in Bethlehem, God’s angel proclaimed to some shepherds that the Messiah had been born (Lk. 2:8–11).  But the angel did not know the Son; nor did he understand what the word “Messiah” meant in God’s mind.  As for demons, whenever Jesus drew near them, the power of God that was in him moved them to declare things beyond their understanding, just as the power of God had moved Balaam’s donkey and Israel’s prophets to speak things beyond theirs.  The Son of God said very plainly that no one knew him except the Father (Mt. 11:27), and we should hold on to that truth regardless of how things appear.  Otherwise, we may become confused when we see that certain men or demons of that time spoke as if they did know him.  Jesus was never confused:

    John 6

    Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, who will we go to? You have words of eternal life.

    And we have believed and are sure that you are the living God’s Messiah!”

    Jesus answered them, “Didn’t I choose you twelve, and one of you is an accuser?”

    It also appears that Peter understood what he was saying at Caesarea Philippi when he exclaimed, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God!” (Mt. 16:16). However, moments later, Jesus rebuked Peter sharply, saying, “Get behind me, Satan!” (Mt. 16:23).  Peter did not know about the hidden Son of God when he called Jesus the Son of God.  He called Jesus the Son of God only because, as Jesus immediately said, God had touched Peter (Mt. 16:17).  Peter was giving expression to something he felt, not to something he understood.

    If we, on this side of Pentecost, impose on the pre-Pentecost disciples or demons a knowledge they did not possess, we miss so much of the story! We know the truth about such terms as “Messiah” and “the Son of God”, but what did those terms mean to Jesus’ disciples?  Even after the resurrection, they were expecting the Messiah to reign as an earthly king and to restore Israel’s former glory (Acts 1:6).  Many in Israel believed that Jesus was the Messiah, but when they professed faith in Jesus, “he did not trust himself to them because . . . he knew what was in man” (Jn. 2:24–25).  More to the point, he knew what was not in man – God’s kind of life.  Jesus did not trust even his disciples when they claimed to believe in him:

    John 16

    His disciples said to him, “Ah! Now you’re talking plainly and using no figure of speech.

    We know now that you know everything, and you have no need for anyone to question you; by this, we believe that you came from God.”

    Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe?

    32a. Behold, an hour is coming, and has now come, when you will be scattered, each to his own house, and you will forsake me.”

    While he walked on earth, the Son of God had to deal with people who hated him with human hatred, some of whom even said that he was demon-possessed (Jn. 8:52). He also dealt with people who loved him with human love, some of whom even tried to force him to be their king (Jn. 6:15).  He dealt with angels who called him Messiah and ministered to him (Lk. 2:11; Mk. 1:13), and he dealt with demons who called him the “Holy One of God” and trembled at his presence (Lk. 4:34).  But neither humans, angels, nor demons knew that, from the beginning, there had been a Son of God in heaven who alone possessed God’s kind of life and who had been God’s agent in the creation of all things.  While the Son walked on earth, regardless of what anyone said or thought about him, pro or con, nobody really knew what they were talking about because nobody had God’s kind of life.

    A perceptive brother in Christ summarized this thought so well that I felt it would be better to quote him than to paraphrase his comments. We must understand, he said, that the universal spiritual ignorance which existed before the day of Pentecost “allows the seemingly endless contradictions and impossibilities to be true.  Every pre-Pentecost event or story that we read about occurred with zero knowledge of what God was doing.  To truly understand those stories, there cannot be an ounce of human pride that allows us the thought, ‘Well, they understood something.’  No, they didn’t.  Everybody was profoundly ignorant of God as this all worked out.  It is breathtaking.”  Yes, it is, brother.

    When Jesus commanded his disciples not to talk about who he was, he did so because he knew that when they saw him perform miracles, they were likely to say too much in their excitement, especially concerning who they thought he might be (e.g., Mt. 16:15–20; 17:1–9). The Son of God had come to rescue fallen man, and he did not want anyone, whether disciples or demons, to talk much about him, for nobody really knew what to say.  Whether they loved him or hated him, they were only loving or hating who they thought he was.

  • Becoming the Truth Is Knowing It

    Brother John,

    Sister Coleen said at the meeting tonight (while speaking about things regarding the true doctrine that we, and brother Coy, have learned), that, “Coy has told me these things before, but I had to hear it from God. I learned this straight from God!” Well, what brother Coy was telling her was from God too, but God had to enable her to take it in.

    It made me think, and remember my own experiences. I believe what she said applies to every one of us, at one time or another.

    How many times have we stood up and testified to a “new thing” that we have learned, and that we now understand, and that new thing turn out to be something that you have been preaching for years. I know I have done it, probably every time I tell about something new that I have learned 🙂   But it IS NEW – new to me, because until then I never really did understand it….even when I thought I did!

    But what I am enjoying so much about this, is that God let me understand why it is this way.

    We can hear something over and over, and understand the words, and repeat them… correctly, but still not truly know what we are saying. When we learn, really learn, doctrine or a portion of God’s truth that we otherwise were ignorant of, it becomes a part of us, and it is alive! When we really learn it, a door has been opened by Jesus, inside of us, and it goes inside and stays there forever, as long as we remain in the light. That truth becomes a living part of us when we really take it in. When it does that, we become IT…living examples of it. We change according to what it has brought into our soul! Until then, we don’t have it. Even if we can tell about it.

    You tell us so many things… day after week after year, and little by little, a day here and a day there. Then, when that door opens up inside of us and what you have been saying is grafted in to us, it becomes us; better yet, we become it! It then becomes our TESTIMONY! We then testify to it, for it is what we truly know! It is our experience. It is now us!

    You told us, in the past, that you could teach doctrine…not because you learned the words from someone else, as so many men do who seek such a worldly interpretation about God, but because it is your testimony! It is your EXPERIENCE!   It became you; you became it when God opened you up and put that truth inside you. You became it, and you can speak of it just the same as I can testify to receiving the holy Ghost.  We can speak to our experience, that is our real testimony!  Our experience with Jesus is the only truth that we can know. And we can tell it with boldness!

    That was what sister Coleen was testifying to. That is learning the truth. It is alive, consuming us as we ingest it. We haven’t learned it until we ARE it!

    God is so amazing. Everything in Him is alive and does some thing in us. Nothing from God is just “there”. It all will accomplish something when taken in.

    So sweet.

    Thank you.
    Good night 🙂

  • Believing the Law and Jesus

    John.

    Hope All Is Well!

    I was just reading through Chapter 5 of the Father and Son book, and I need help getting my thoughts in order.

    I follow the very important point you are making, and I can’t think of a better way to convey the message, but I have trouble believing that anyone keeping the law didn’t recognize Jesus. After all,Jesus said,”If you had believed what Moses wrote, you would have believed me.”

    Also, even when Paul says he had a clear conscious while he persecuted the saints, some of his actions at that time in his life were contrary to the law of Moses, were they not??

    Wendell

    Here is the excerpt, from Chapter 5:

    Young Paul’s respectable kind of wickedness, his self-righteous pride, was the same kind of wickedness that motivated the elders of Israel to persecute and kill Jesus.  The sin of Israel’s self-righteous elders was greater than any sin that the Gentiles, who did not have God’s law, could commit, and it was greater than the sins of fellow Jews who did not keep the commandments.

    Those self-righteous elders condemned others who did not know and keep the law (Jn. 7:49), but drunkards, harlots, and other outcasts in Israel were not the ones who pursued God’s saints to destroy them.  Only Jewish elders who meticulously kept the law and were proud of it had the strength to commit that degree of wickedness.

    ===============

    Hi Wendell.

    Thanks for the question. I think you are asking how it could be (since Jesus said believing the law meant that one would believe in him) that the elders of Israel, who seemed to be so intent on keeping the law, did not recognize Jesus as the Messiah.  Those in Israel who refused Christ Jesus did not keep the law as God intended for it to be kept.  They only kept a version of the law, according to Jesus, a version that accentuated ceremony far above moral uprightness.  Furthermore, the law they kept had been added to, which Moses had strictly forbidden Israel to do.  The rulers in Jesus time revered, as equal to God’s law, “the traditions of the elders”.  In fact, sometimes, they even honored their traditions above the word of God in the law.

    So, while it appeared that many in Israel observed the law and yet did not receive Jesus, such is not the case.  Every person who sincerely believed what Moses wrote, and obeyed the commandments God gave Moses for Israel, recognized and loved Jesus as being the Messiah.

    As for Paul, yes, I assume that some of his actions were contrary to the law, rightly understood. But he was among those who were diligently keeping a version of the law instead of the law as God gave it.  And since young Paul clearly believed that keeping that version of the law pleased God, then it is not surprising that his conscience was clear at that time in his life.

    Let us earnestly pray that God will save us from the deadly error of being confident we are right when He sees us as being wrong!

  • Oral Roberts Video

    Pastor John,

    In the YouTube video you sent, I just love Bro. Roberts attitude and humility, as well as seeing the humility from the audience honoring what God was doing.   It was said that he was God’s man for his time; I truly believe that. I feel it’s a humble heart that God wants the most. Many people have tried to imitate this and have failed because they were not God’s men for their time.

    I am thankful for the man for my soul for my time; it’s not a small thing to know whom God has put over you and the precious souls whom God has surrounded you (to help you). It brings peace, joy, safety, and love by knowing who has been anointed from God to help you.

    Many of us have traveled some distances to be close to the anointing of God for our (my) life. To some, it’s a miracle how we got here. But we wanted Jesus with all of our hearts and Jesus has led us to a place where we can be saved. However, it will take the same humility as Bro. Roberts and the other folks had in the video to endure to the end to be saved; that truth (humility) will always be the same.  The fastest way to get one’s self out of the way is humility, and to honor what God is doing at that time.

    I just love the feelings of sincerity and humility watching these videos. Truly, Brother Roberts is a Prince in God’s Kingdom.

  • Woke Up this Morning!

    I woke up this morning with this thought: “Write down the 10 signs that things are going well with your soul.”

    Ok. I’m sure there are 100’s, but here’s my 10!

    Gary

    10 Signs That Things Are Going Well With Your Soul

    1) You love the Holy Ghost.

    You just love it. You love speaking in tongues.  You love seeing people touched by it and under its influence.  You love hearing people tell of their experiences with it. You love it because it is God’s life and you appreciate knowing that no one is right without it.

    2)   You have a testimony, and love to tell it.

    Every little thing God says or does to you is important, and you love telling about it because it’s not you, it’s God. You love telling what God has done, and you love feeling the Spirit on you when you tell it. You love giving your testimony because you know your testimony will overcome the flesh and the world.

    3)   You are a person of praise.

    You love praising God, because you love Him. It’s not something you think about, you just raise your hands and give God glory and praise, and you love the feelings that come with it. You love singing, shouting, crying, and speaking His praises, because he is God. He is holy.  He has forgiven you and changed you, and made you a child of God, and that is something to praise Him for with all of your heart.  Anything that keeps you from it has got to go.

    4)  You love the things of the Spirit.

    You love everything that has the anointed touch of Jesus on it. Whether it is the writings, the music, the testimonies, or anything else that has the mark of the Spirit on it. You devour these things day in and day out, because they nourish your soul.

    5)  You love the man of God.

    You love and appreciate the man of God, because you recognize God’s hand on him. He is worthy of double honor.  You love hearing his voice, You love seeing his face. You know that things could be very different without him.  You love watching the Holy Ghost move through him and use him.  When nobody has an answer, the man of God does, and you recognize the voice of your shepherd when it speaks.

    6)  You are a servant to God’s children, and others.

    You are a servant to others, because life is no longer about you. You love serving God’s children, because they belong to your Father and they are valuable – worth your time and investment. You can’t do things without trying to involve others somehow, and be a blessing to them. It’s just no fun alone, and besides that, we can’t do it alone. Not even the Father wanted that…. so he created a Son.

    7)  Everything about the son of God thrills you.

    When you hear the name of Jesus your ears perk up. There’s just something about that name that is precious to you. You love reading about him in the Bible and seeing him revealed. You love talking to him. You love feeling his love for you.   You pray to him, and you await his return, because you want to be with him forever. It’s Jesus.

    8)  You are being persecuted simply because of your love of truth.

    If you’re living numbers one through seven above, then somewhere, someone will be against you, speak against you, or just be plain cruel. Usually it’s close to home, from your own biological family or friends or work-mates.  And it hurts.  Your love for God and truth confuses people. The only way to make it stop is to be silent, and cover the light. So pray that you never do, and pray for a heart to say as Jesus did, “father forgive them they know not what they’re doing.”

    9)  You don’t want your own opinion about anything.

    When you are crucified, what you want doesn’t amount to much. We have been crucified with Christ, and can say, “not my will, but yours be done.” You are constantly being delivered from your own opinions.  Be delivered and believe God. Whatever he says about anything is all yoi want.

    10) You Love the Holy Ghost.

    God is in heaven. Jesus is there beside him. But the Holy Ghost is here now, and it’s the only thing that makes our worship to God acceptable.  So it bears repeating. Love this Holy Ghost. They that are led by the Spirit are the children of God. Love the Holy Ghost. Whenever anything else takes precedent, God’s children have always fallen from truth, and grown distant to the God they were destined to be with forever. Love the Holy Ghost.

  • A Humble Attitude

    Hey ,

    Tonight was so good!  I love it when Jesus shows up, when he hears our prayers and answers them.  I love what Jesus did and is doing.  Today, I was going through the Old Meeting notes and ran across the following note on an Old Meeting dated June 1980.  You were praying then the same prayer we have today.  Brother xxx was in this meeting in 1980, and you and him sang the song below.  After tonight, the prayer is still the same.

    Note: June 1980

    “JDC speaks (on having an humble attitude toward those who fall away from the truth of Christ or have weaknesses).  If you have the right attitude, you will something pray like this: “Lord, forgive me for what they have done.” And you’ll wear sackcloth for the backslider instead wearing a smirk.”

    What Will You Do?
    by Dallas Holmes

    All I had to give I gave;
    All I had to say I’ve said to you.
    What will you do?
    All the tears I’ve cried for you
    All the pain I’ve felt inside for you.
    What will you do?

    Chorus:
    Will you turn Me down today?
    Will you up and walk away?
    Inside your heart you’ll say it’s not for me.
    So laugh at Me and turn Me away;
    Say anything you want to say;
    But all I’m telling you is true
    And all I’ve done I’ve done for you.

    All your life I’ve tried and tried
    Just to find a place inside of you,
    What will you do?
    Think of all the things I’ve said;
    Think how on the cross I bled for you.
    What will you do?

    Chorus
    And now I guess it’s up to you.
    What will you do?
    What will you do?

  • Oral Roberts’ Interview

    (Click the link below to view the interview between Benny Hinn and Oral Roberts.)

    ============

    Hi Pastor John:

    On our way home from KY today, I rigged my phone up over the truck speakers where Judy could watch and I could listen to the video you spoke about last night. It was very sweet to see the humility that Bro. Roberts had and to see Bro. Benny Hinn honoring him above himself and be in his place.
    Going through the first tunnel, the video kept playing on my phone: the signal stops when I have played things in my phone in the past in the tunnel.

    Towards the end of the video going through the 2nd tunnel , Benny Hinn ask Bro Roberts to stretch forth his hand and pray and Bro. Roberts said he felt the anointing in his right arm as he prayed and stretched it forth as in times past during his healing crusades.  I prayed, “Lord, please don’t let the video signal go out and I stretched my fingers to touch his on my phone screen. When I did, Judy put her hand on my hand.  I felt the power of God go down my fingers and arm and ran to my head and then down to my feet; it was overwhelming for me and I could not stop crying from the love of God that I felt.    It was at the level when I felt that kind of love at your doorway in 2001 when Darren played,

    “Rest Oh My Child” .

    As I was crying I kept telling Judy, “I felt that, I believe that”.  When I looked at Judy, she was crying too.  She handed me a napkin to wipe my face but I couldn’t stop sobbing.  The signal never failed in the 2nd tunnel either as Bro Roberts stopped prying.  The video stopped about the time we came out of the tunnel: the sun was brilliant and bright and everything looked so green and beautiful.

    I just wanted to share and thank Jesus for those feelings that Judy and I shared together today.

    Dear Bro. John:

    I have heard you say many times that Brother Roberts was a “Prince in the Kingdom of God”.  I so felt that tonight as I watched him telling of the miracles and the experiences that he had with Jesus.  Such humility as he told Jesus he didn’t know what to do to take his healing ministry to his generation; how Jesus asked him if he had received the holy Spirit, and he replied yes.  And then Jesus asked him if he knew what he had, and he told Jesus so humbly he was sure he didn’t know, but if he could just walk by his side as the disciples did . . . and Jesus told him that the holy Spirit was His Presence.  What a beautiful story!

    As Brother Roberts continued to tell of his life and the things of God, tears began to build in my eyes.  I felt my heart just being drawn into his testimonies and the sincerity in his words.  Especially when he began to talk about the healing tent meetings.  When he told the story of Willie Phelps, the boy with the polio, I just wept.  He said that sometimes all the healings don’t happen right then and there.  But that little boy came back a year later to one of Bro. Roberts’ tent meetings – and was walking without crutches!!  Whew!  Jesus is REAL!

    It reminded me of the night I was brought to a tent meeting in New Bern as a small child, and Brother Creech prayed for my eye to be healed from the large cyst that had grown on it.  The doctors said only surgery would take care of it, and it would leave me scarred for life.  Brother Creech pinned an anointed cloth on my little dress and laid hands on me.  He sent me home to thank Jesus every night for healing my eye.  My mother and I did just that.  And just a few days later, we found the cyst had rolled out and was lying in the bed covers!  No scar to this day!!  Praise Jesus!!  Jesus knew me and cared for me even before I knew him!

    Thank you for sending this video.  It blessed me so much.  We have no reason at all to hang our heads about anything.  As Jesus asked Brother Roberts when he told Jesus he had the holy Spirit: “Do you know what you have?”  My, my!  It made me want to “have a little talk with Jesus” just to hear his sweet Voice!  And to believe that what we have in the holy Ghost can overcome anything!

    All we have to do is share Jesus with one another.  The words of Jesus always have life in them!  I could feel the anointing in Brother

    Roberts’ testimony as if he had just heard them from Jesus!  So very sweet and sincere.

    Thank you for everything you do to encourage us in the Lord.  The meeting last night and Brother Roberts’ video stirred sweet feelings that I love to feel!

    Sandy  🙂

    ============

    I’ve loved watching Oral Roberts clips on YouTube the past couple of days too. I’ve watched several of whatever I can find.

    I love what I feel from him. I love to imagine what it would be like back then in the 50’s and 60s with him around, preaching an healing, an also being on TV. I imagine that time would have been such a blessed time. It would not be allowed at all now.

    What amazes me is that despite that – and that he is a prince in God’s kingdom, he sill didn’t know the exact truth. It makes me glad that Jesus is that good, that he didn’t require Brother Roberts to know the exact truth.

    I hope you are having a good day.

    Jenny

    ============

    I know, Jenny.  After I grew up and Jesus taught me some of his sweet truth, I wondered why such a very great man of God as Oral Roberts would call his work a “crusade”.  The Crusades of the Popes were such wicked enterprises! But, Brother Roberts was not my servant; he was God’s, so I just leave it alone.  I love that man still.  He is still alive, and I want to meet him someday.
