  • Old Meeting Notes

    Pastor John,

    Reading the old meeting notes from 1969* that you just sent out; I read:

    Preacher Clark on how to tell a wise virgin from a foolish one: “The wise can get along with anybody. The foolish can’t get along with anybody. They are always discontent.”

    I had to consider what this meant for a moment, that the foolish can’t get along because they “are always discontent.”  I then heard my heart say, “Lord, some saints haven’t gotten along (with others) because they want their own way.”  I immediately heard back, “Well, they are discontent.”

    Ha!  That’s right!  If we are content, we aren’t pushing to have it our way.

    Thanks for those!

    Jerry

  • Question regarding marriage: 1Corinthians 7:14

    Good morning Pastor John,

    Kevin and I were listening to a tract on Marriage and Divorce (Going to Jesus.com Tracts – Marriage and Divorce).  We talked about how the holy Ghost is needed in order to be equally yoked.

    He had a question that I wasn’t sure how to answer from 1Corinthians 7:14 below:  What makes the children unclean?

    The [pleased-to-dwell-with] unbelieving husband is sanctified by the [believing] wife, and the [pleased-to-dwell-with] unbelieving wife is sanctified by the [believing] husband; otherwise, your children are unclean.”

    Is the answer the unbeliever?

    Thank you,

    Rebekah E.

    ==========

    Hi, Rebekah.

    I don’t know why Paul used that word in reference to children.  It may be that he knew the relationship between a believer and a non-believer which produced the child was not in the will of God.  Other than that, I can’t think of a reason Paul would have made that statement.  After all, Jesus spoke well of little children, even telling his disciples that unless they became as little children, they would never see the kingdom of God (Mt. 18:1–3).

    Sorry, but that’s the best I can do with that question.  Maybe someone who reads this can provide a better answer.

  • The Synthesis Book – Baptism

    I just finished reading the part in the Synthesis book about baptism.  So informative, so helpful and useful. I especially loved reading the words of this 17th century “Quaker” theologian (Robert Barclay) who basically summarized the truth about baptism:

    “As there is one Lord and one faith, so there is one baptism; which is ‘not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience before God, by the resurrection of Jesus Christ.’ And this baptism is a pure and spiritual thing, to wit, the baptism of the Spirit and fire, by which we are buried with Him, that being washed and purged from our sins, we may walk in newness of life; of which the baptism of John was a figure which was commanded for a time, and not to continue for ever.”

    I’m thankful that God allows us to see that the truth has been out there the whole time, despite the apostasy of the body of Christ, received, believed and taught by those who were willing and obedient.

    Thank you that you keep digging, studying and writing, just so we (and hopefully many others) can be blessed by nuggets of knowledge such as this one.

  • The Magi

    Pastor John,

    Were the Magi who came to see the baby Jesus Jews?

    Wendell

    ==========

    Hi Wendell,

    There is nothing in the Bible which indicates the Magi were Jews.  Some who lived in Mesopotamia were well-known observers of the skies, as far back as Babylonian times.  So, to have Magi observing the stars and determining that a king had been born in Israel fits that narrative.  The real question is, what did the Magi see in the heavens that let them know a king had been born?  And why did they even make that long journey to honor him?  Kings’ sons were being born all the time.  Did they travel to other countries as well?  If not, maybe they were indeed Jews who had learned from the heathen in Mesopotamia how to read the stars.

    There is much more that we do not know (about anything, really) than there is that we know.  So, let’s stay thankful for what God has revealed.  He did not have to do it; He just wanted to because He loved us.

  • Testimony, Mark W.

    Good morning Pastor John,

    I got called in to work for an anesthesia machine failure this morning and had a couple of experiences I want to share with you.  I will start with the second first.

    As I was leaving one of the techs that clean equipment was telling me her mother was in the hospital.   While she was telling the story, I started to tell her I would pray for her mother.  But before I could even draw the breath to start I heard/felt, “Don’t do it.”  As she continued talking, I thought about this but the feeling was still there and growing so I didn’t say it.  I have always just popped off with “I will pray for you/them”, so this feeling makes me wonder.  First, is that a right feeling?  As I thought about it, I felt, “You don’t know her or her mother, nor how they live.  Maybe she’s where God wants her.”  Then, “You don’t just pray for people, things, situations just because you or someone else doesn’t like them.”  I am not sure what to make of this.  As I said, I would always pray, never even considering whether it might be wrong to pray.  Please help!?

    =============

    That is a great lesson, Mark.  Thank you for sharing it.  I think some good people can fall into a rut, saying by habit that they are praying, or will pray, but they are not.  Not really.  I see it all the time.

    =============

    Now to the first experience.  As I was waiting on the surgery to be completed, I didn’t want to waste the time, so I read one of the Father and Son messages.  I was in a darkened office alone reading it.  As I got to the last page, I had a strong feeling of the spirits at the cross.  I closed my eyes and could see a cross with a man (whom I knew was Jesus) hung on it, dark sky, feeling doom, people on my right were partying, people on my left, up the hill a bit, were in great sorrow, and the feeling of a great storm about to erupt was in the air.  My heart was about to burst from the sorrow.  I felt like my heart was growing.   I fell to my knees and put my face to the ground in my heart (don’t know any better way to say it).  Tears were welling up in my heart.  There was such a wide range of emotions and behaviors from the people on that hillside!  I am not doing this justice at all.  I still want to cry when I think about it.  I felt him look down at me.   Then, someone walked by here and I “came to”.

    While reflecting on it a few minutes later, I was not sure what to think.  I don’t know what purpose this is to serve.  So I hesitate to even write this to you, but the feelings I got reading the message are so real.  The memory of this daydream was so strong I don’t want to withhold something I should share.  So I will leave this to you to discern, and may God help me be a faithful and true servant, not a storyteller.  I don’t think my imagination is that good, as I wasn’t even thinking of the cross.  But the very next lines I read were, “It was not Jesus’ death, but God’s acceptance of his sacrifice that made eternal life available to man.”  I tried to put this down and not send it, but it is all I can think about so you have it now!

    Mark W.

    =============

    That is a wonderful experience, Mark.  The only thing that would make it better is if you were here in person telling it!  Thank you again.

  • “What Has God Said About It?”

    Pastor John,

    https://youtu.be/eOmuCoyCiCg?si=ddda9hgFsEGapMh2

    It is exciting to have something this good for God’s people to hear!  I spent over half my life not knowing that we could hear from God, not knowing how real He is!

    When I was water baptized, I prayed to come out of that water feeling different, praying to know God was real!

    I want God’s people to hear this message!  What mercy, for God to make a way for us to know that He has forgiven us and that He has heard our hearts!

    I always try and wait for you to post them first and share from your fb page!  But this one is hard to wait on!

  • Increase in Government

    Pastor John,

    I keep thinking about that wonderful verse from Isaiah 9:7 that we read Sunday morning: “Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end…”

    It’s the same reason that God cannot lie.  When He speaks, He creates anew, so there is no end to anything He does.  It’s not possible to see the end of what God can do!  Whether it be new government, new feelings, new thoughts, new experiences…it’s the only thing with infinite, eternal possibilities because He is the ONLY one that can create anything.  It’s so exciting!

  • Question regarding Matthew 8:28 and Mark 5:2

    Pastor John,

    I had never noticed that there were two demon possessed men in one passage, and just one in the other.  I had always assumed these to be the same event.

    Matthew 8:28 (KJV)
    “And when he was come to the other side into the country of the Gergesenes, there met him two possessed with devils…”

    Mark 5:2 (KJV)
    “And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit.”

    ===========

    Hi Wendell.

    No one knows for certain the answer to your question.  Jesus performed many more healings and miracles than are recorded in the Bible (Jn.21:25), and with that many miracles, there were bound to be some that were very similar.  But it may also be that Matthew told a part of the story that Mark left out.  Nobody can say for sure.

  • Father and Son “Remembers” #29

    Pastor John,

    You know what is really incredible and overwhelming to me? Between reading the Remembers (F&S Remembers, 29) for the Father and Son book and reading the Synthesis book, Jesus was still willing to die for the few that will be saved in the end, despite knowing that many more people would successfully dilute the vitality of the Spirit with ceremony/false doctrines.

    Jesus really is good to us. He was good to us, even before our time here on earth—and after, if we obey Him.

    Wendy

    =========

    That’s a good observation, Wendy.  The whole story, rightly seen, shows the love of God for His chosen people.

    Pastor John

    =========

    Yes!  And I was thinking two things after coffee this morning:

    1. What Damien said about how it’s different when you’re dealing with people who have received the Spirit but there’s nothing to talk about. When people have the Spirit and have chosen to walk in the flesh, they have rejected God AND his children who still have fellowship with Him.  So, that’s why it’s so difficult to be around them.  We’re supposed to have conversations based on fellowship, but it’s severed.
    1. God and Jesus don’t want to be alone in Heaven. There’s no way for that to happen without fellowship with God’s sons and daughters.  They don’t want to be alone, they want us there!  They want us to be together with them, here and ultimately in heaven.

    It is really all about the love of God for us.
