{"id":12020,"date":"2021-05-03T17:51:43","date_gmt":"2021-05-03T17:51:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pjhmail.wordpress.com\/?p=12020"},"modified":"2021-05-03T17:51:43","modified_gmt":"2021-05-03T17:51:43","slug":"exodus-18-17-24","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pastorjohnshouse.com\/mailbag\/12020\/exodus-18-17-24\/","title":{"rendered":"Exodus 18: 17\u201324"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Hi Pastor John,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">I was reading this section of Exodus 18 to see if God or Jethro told Moses to appoint men to help him judge Israel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align:justify;\" start=\"17\">\n<li><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Then Moses\u2019 father-in-law said to him, \u201cWhat you are doing is not good.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:#000000;\">You will certainly wear out, both you and this people who are with you, because this thing is too heavy for you. You cannot do it alone.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Listen now to my voice. Let me advise you, and may God be with you. You must remain before God for the people, and bring their cases to God.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:#000000;\">And you teach them the statutes and laws and make known to them the way they are to live and the thing they must do,<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:#000000;\">But you look for able men who fear God among the people, trustworthy men who hate a bribe, and set over them rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:#000000;\">And let them judge the people at all times, and it will be that they will bring every great matter to you, but every lesser matter, they will themselves judge. So, make it easier on yourself, and let them bear\u00a0<em>the burden<\/em>with you.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:#000000;\">If you will do this thing, and God command it you, then you will be able to continue, and all this people will also go to their place in peace.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:#000000;\">And Moses hearkened to the voice of his father-in-law, and he did everything that he had said.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">In verse 23, Jethro says &#8220;if God commands you&#8221;.\u00a0 Then, verse 24 says Moses &#8220;hearkened to the voice of his father-in-law,&#8221; but it does not say he sought God or that God thought it good.\u00a0 So,\u00a0did the elders that began as helpers for Moses eventually become the Pharisees?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Beth D<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">==========<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#0013a3;\"><em>Hi, Beth.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#0013a3;\"><em>Moses\u2019 helpers in Exodus 18 pre-dated the Pharisees by about a thousand years,\u00a0so, they did not become the Pharisees.\u00a0 And as for who told Moses to appoint\u00a0helpers, I feel sure that God approved of Jethro&#8217;s suggestion for\u00a0Moses to do so, for Moses really did need the help.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#0013a3;\"><em>Remember, Jethro was a Midianite, and the\u00a0Midianites were the smartest people in the Old Testament.\u00a0 So, his suggestion was a very good one.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#0013a3;\"><em>Thanks for the question.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><span style=\"color:#0013a3;\"><em>Pastor John<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hi Pastor John,\u00a0 I was reading this section of Exodus 18 to see if God or Jethro told Moses to appoint men to help him judge Israel.\u00a0 Then Moses\u2019 father-in-law said to him, \u201cWhat you are doing is not good.
