Hey there! I was reading in Genesis and have a question about verse 4:7.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf you do good, will you not be accepted?\u00a0 But if you do not do good, sin is crouching at the door.\u00a0 And (his) desire will be toward you, and you will rule over (him).\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Who are the \u201chis\u201d and \u201chim\u201d referring to in this sentence?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0his\u00a0and\u00a0him\u00a0in that verse refer to Abel.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

For a person’s desire to be toward someone means that person will be in a subservient role.\u00a0 The phrase is used with Adam and Eve after the Fall when God told Eve that her desire would be toward Adam:\u00a0\u201cYour desire shall be toward your husband, and he shall rule over you\u201d (Gen. 3:16).\u00a0 In Genesis 4, God is telling Cain that if he does right, he will occupy a higher position than his younger brother Abel, as was proper.\u00a0 And that means that Cain had no reason to envy and hate Abel \u2013 if Cain will only do what was right in God’s sight.\u00a0 But instead of doing that, Cain was stubborn and decided\u00a0to just get rid of Abel.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n
