What is John saying here, in 1John\u00a05:<\/span><\/p>\n

    I don’t have a clear answer for that, Beth, but the answer is definitely connected in some way with verses 5\u20136 of the same chapter:<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

    1. Who is it who overcomes the world except he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?<\/span><\/li>\n
    2. This is he who came through water and blood\u2014Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood.\u00a0\u00a0And the Spirit is the witness because the Spirit is truth.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      The answer to your question must have something to do with the Spirit bearing witness in the human body of Jesus and of us who believe.\u00a0 His body and ours came “through water [our mother’s womb – see John 3:5] and blood”.\u00a0 I think that “blood” here refers to human nature (see John 1:13).\u00a0 If not,\u00a0I do not know what John meant by that.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

      By the way, Paul emphasized our human\u00a0selves bearing witness in conjunction with the Spirit in <\/em>Romans 8:16: “The Spirit itself bears witness, together with our spirit, that we are the children of God.”\u00a0<\/span> So, that may help clarify what John\u00a0wrote.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

      That’s the best I can do with that one,\u00a0Beth.\u00a0 Thank you for your question.\u00a0 It’s one that I have pondered over many times.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n
