{"id":15559,"date":"2025-04-17T14:41:49","date_gmt":"2025-04-17T19:41:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pastorjohnshouse.com\/mailbag\/?p=15559"},"modified":"2025-04-19T09:16:24","modified_gmt":"2025-04-19T14:16:24","slug":"pass-over-or-hover-over","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pastorjohnshouse.com\/mailbag\/15559\/pass-over-or-hover-over\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;pass over&#8221; or hover over?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hey,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A\u00a0friend\u00a0put this post (below) on Facebook.\u00a0 It is an interesting\u00a0possibility, and I feel like it is a much better translation possibility for Ex. 12:23, 27 especially.\u00a0 The blood on the\u00a0doors is a figure of the Spirit, so the idea of covenant and presence of God in this post has merit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In Isaiah 31:5, the idea of hovering seems much better than &#8220;pass over\u00a0<em>her<\/em>&#8220;, as we have it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Like birds flying, so will Jehovah of Hosts defend Jerusalem; He will defend and deliver\u00a0<em>her<\/em>. He will pass over\u00a0<em>her<\/em>\u00a0and spare\u00a0<em>her<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This article\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thetorah.com\/article\/how-pesach-became-passover\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.thetorah.com\/article\/how-pesach-became-passover&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1745089686108000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0POaLX3D8pmGjls36jjkAC\">https:\/\/www.thetorah.com\/article\/how-pesach-became-passover<\/a><\/span>\u00a0was interesting as background to the history of the translation of the word.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Damien<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;Most people think Passover means God skipped over the houses with blood on the doorposts. But the Hebrew word \u201cpesach\u201d doesn\u2019t mean \u201cto pass by\u201d\u2014it means to hover over or protect.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">God didn\u2019t avoid those homes\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">He entered into covenant with them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">He hovered over them like a shield.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">He stood guard as death swept through Egypt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Passover isn\u2019t about avoidance\u2014it\u2019s about presence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A God who draws near to protect those marked by His covenant.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">===========<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Hi Damien.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">I have to wonder if this is an idea\u00a0that comes from people wanting to help clean up God&#8217;s reputation, to keep Him from being a killer.\u00a0 If He is only hovering over and protecting the houses of the Israelites, then what is He protecting them from?\u00a0 A rogue angel.\u00a0 In Ex. 12:12, He said this:<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0\u05d5\u05b0\u05e2\u05b8\u05d1\u05b7\u05e8\u05b0\u05ea\u05bc\u05b4\u05a3\u05d9 \u05d1\u05b0\u05d0\u05b6\u05bd\u05e8\u05b6\u05e5\u05be\u05de\u05b4\u05e6\u05b0\u05e8\u05b7\u05d9\u05b4\u05dd\u05ae \u05d1\u05bc\u05b7\u05dc\u05bc\u05b7\u05a3\u05d9\u05b0\u05dc\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d4\u05b7\u05d6\u05bc\u05b6\u05d4\u0592<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">He is the one (in the angel of death) who is passing through Egypt killing people.\u00a0 It seems to me that God is not hovering over the Israelites protecting them,\u00a0but is letting them live as He passes through the\u00a0land killing the\u00a0firstborn.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Exodus 22:23 says that God will &#8220;pass across\/through&#8221; Egypt and will &#8220;skip over&#8221; the Israelites.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t see the\u00a0need to make that &#8220;hover over&#8221; them.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t\u00a0see\u00a0a problem\u00a0with &#8220;pass over&#8221; there.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">All this seems suspect to me of a new-age\u00a0type defense of God&#8217;s character.\u00a0 That&#8217;s my take on it, anyway.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">jdc.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">PS<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">What would we do with &#8220;killing the Passover&#8221; as in Ex. 12:21; Dt. 16:2, 5\u20136, etc., &#8220;keeping the\u00a0Passover&#8221; as in 2Chron.\u00a035:1, or &#8220;eating the Passover&#8221; as in 2Chron. 30:18?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">============<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Yes, I think you have it right.
