Why did David hate the lame and the blind?<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. And the king, with his men, went to Jerusalem, to the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land. And they spoke to David, saying, \u201cYou will not enter here. For even the blind and the lame will repel you,\u201d thinking, \u201cDavid will not enter here.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. But David took the stronghold of Zion, which is the city of David.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. And David said on that day, \u201cLet everyone strike down a Jebusite!\u201d\u00a0And by way of the water shaft, he reached\u00a0\u201cthe lame and the blind\u201d, who were hated by David\u2019s soul.\u00a0\u00a0For this reason, they say, \u201cThe blind and the lame shall not enter into the house.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    David did not hate those who were really lame and the blind.\u00a0 In verse 8, the writer was mocking the words of the arrogant Jebusites who boasted that David could not take their city, saying, “even the blind and the lame will repel you.\u201d\u00a0 The writer is calling all the Jebusites lame and blind, saying that David hated them.\u00a0 Then, after David’s victory (v. 7), the vain, taunting boast of the Jebusites became a parable in Israel for all who proudly make empty boasts.\u00a0 We would say, “Don’t count your chickens before they hatch.”\u00a0 It is the same as what King Ahab told the Syrian king after he had boasted that he would defeat Israel, “He who straps on his armor [to go to war] should not boast like the one who [is victorious and returns home and] loosens it” (1Kgs. 20:11)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n
