Pastor John,<\/span><\/p>\n

We read\u00a0from the Gospel of Mark this evening\u00a0,\u00a0and in\u00a0there, I noticed\u00a0the use of the names \u201cBeelzebub\u201d, \u201cprince of demons\u201d, and \u201cSatan\u201d,\u00a0\u00a0and it\u00a0stood out to me (Mark 3:22-26).<\/span><\/p>\n

(Originally, it stood out because in this scene\u00a0it appeared that\u00a0Jesus and the\u00a0scribes were in agreement that Satan was evil. That just seemed to be a “given”, based on their dialogue.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>I understood it to be that they were all in agreement that Beelzebub, the prince of demons<\/strong>,<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>and Satan were all the same being.\u00a0 So,\u00a0I was going to ask you if the scribes having the knowledge of Satan being evil was possible<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>,<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>since Satan had not yet been revealed as evil.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0But, as I put the email together, I noticed something new…new to me….and my question has changed)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

In this scene, the scribes are speaking evil of Jesus for doing good.\u00a0 The scribes in Verse 22 had accused Jesus of working under the influence of, and also\u00a0being possessed by,\u00a0an evil creature that they called \u201cBeelzebub\u201d and the \u201cprince of demons\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

What the scribes\u00a0did not do, is call\u00a0that evil being\u00a0Satan.\u00a0 Only Jesus, in the next verse, went on to call this same creature\u00a0Satan, when He said, \u201cHow can Satan cast out Satan?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

My Question: Did the scribes know they were actually speaking of the\u00a0Bible\u00a0character Satan\u00a0(the one that those scribes would have known from Chronicles, Job, Zechariah\u00a0and Psalms), when they spoke of this evil\u00a0being called Beelzebub and the prince of demons\u00a0in V22 ?<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u00a0am thinking, \u201cno\u201d, since Satan had not yet been revealed as evil.\u00a0 Right?<\/span><\/p>\n

That is right.\u00a0 Nobody but Jesus knew Satan was evil because the Son was not yet revealed.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

If any or all of what I have said is correct, would they (the scribes) have understood in the next verse\u00a0(verse 23) that Jesus had\u00a0just identified, perhaps for the very\u00a0first time, that\u00a0\u201cthe prince of demons\u201d\u00a0they had just referred to, was Satan from the scriptures, the same Satan that was God\u2019s servant in the Old Testament scriptures.\u00a0 Would they have understood what He just said to them, would they have\u00a0cared?<\/span><\/p>\n

The scribes and other elders of Israel did not understand Jesus.\u00a0 For that matter, not even Jesus\u2019 disciples understood him.\u00a0 Besides, even if the scribes had understood what Jesus was saying about Satan, they would not have trusted his judgment of that powerful heavenly creature.\u00a0 The wicked nature of Satan\u2019s character was a revelation to mankind, part of the revelation of the Son.\u00a0 But nobody comprehended that revelation until after Pentecost, when humans received God\u2019s kind of life, the only kind of life that enables humans to understand the things of God.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n
