{"id":74,"date":"2008-09-28T04:56:35","date_gmt":"2008-09-28T08:56:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pastorjohnshouse.com\/Correspondence\/?p=55"},"modified":"2008-09-28T04:56:35","modified_gmt":"2008-09-28T08:56:35","slug":"gal-46","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pastorjohnshouse.com\/mailbag\/74\/gal-46\/","title":{"rendered":"Gal 4:6"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Pastor John<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">I was reading something where the author was saying that being born of the Spirit is a distinct experience from receiving the Spirit and he cited Gal 4:6 as support.\u00a0 &#8220;And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">His point being that this verse says that it was because they are sons that God sent the Spirit.\u00a0 Now when you read the similar things in Romans 8 Paul lays it out in the order we believe, and I believe verses such as Galatian 3:26-7: &#8220;For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.\u00a0 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ,&#8221; and 4:7: &#8220;Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.&#8221;\u00a0 [These verses] make it difficult to hold the author&#8217;s point but nevertheless v6 is a bit odd.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">I have been considering the context of Gal 4.\u00a0 It seems Paul is speaking of the Jews in verses 1-7 and then makes a comparison to the Gentile situation from v8 onwards.\u00a0 Verse 5 seems clear in this regard, &#8220;To redeem them that were under the law,&#8221; but then you might expect in verse 6 something like &#8220;and because they are( or were) sons&#8221; rather than &#8220;and because you are sons&#8221;.\u00a0 The grammar seems awkward.\u00a0 &#8220;You are sons&#8221; would appear to be directed to the Gentile Galatians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">If Paul is speaking of the Jews that would help explain his wording in v6.\u00a0 Faithful Jews were sons of Abraham and for that reason were fit to receive the spiritual adoption which is to receive the Spirit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Am I missing something here?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Damien<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color:#000000;\"> ==========<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><em>Hi Damien:<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><em>That verse is a reference to the foreknowledge of God.\u00a0 Because God knew He had chosen them before the foundation of the world\u00a0to be His sons, He sent the Spirit of His Son to them, to bring it to pass.\u00a0 That view of Galatians 4:6 brings that verse\u00a0into line with everything else Paul ever wrote.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><em>Pastor John<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pastor John I was reading something where the author was saying that being born of the Spirit is a distinct experience from receiving the Spirit and he cited Gal 4:6 as support.\u00a0 &#8220;And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.&#8221; His point being [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[6],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-74","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-qa"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/pastorjohnshouse.com\/mailbag\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/74"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/pastorjohnshouse.com\/mailbag\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/pastorjohnshouse.com\/mailbag\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/pastorjohnshouse.com\/mailbag\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/pastorjohnshouse.com\/mailbag\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=74"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/pastorjohnshouse.com\/mailbag\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/74\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/pastorjohnshouse.com\/mailbag\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=74"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/pastorjohnshouse.com\/mailbag\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=74"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/pastorjohnshouse.com\/mailbag\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=74"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
